My name is Anita Oncharoen, and I am a Bucknell sophomore planning to pursue a major in Creative Writing. I grew up in the Baltimore suburbs with my parents, grandmother, and two dogs, and when I was ten I developed an interesting in writing that has lasted to this day. I went to high school at George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology, where I spent four years in the Literary Arts program, received two Honorable Mentions from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, and capped off my senior year with the publication of my first book, a collection of short stories. I also spent three years volunteering at Wellwood International School, working mostly with kindergarten through second grade as a classroom assistant. Other than writing, my interests include reading, researching historical time periods (mainly the 19th and early 20th centuries), and sewing costumes in the Bucknell Theatre and Dance Department’s costume shop.
After taking Bucknell’s Survey of British and American Literature class last semester, in which I was introduced to writers like Bao Phi, I became interested in examining media representations of nonwhite races, in particular the treatment and representation (or lack thereof) of Asians and Asian Americans in Hollywood films.
I look forward to learning more about the relationship between literature and American social movements in this class.
